RENEE Tiun has always perceived beauty pageants as superficial; that is before she
joined Miss Malaysia Earth 2008.
"Joining this pageant has proved me wrong,” said the 22-year-old.
Being the third largest pageant in the world, it is the only one that campaigns
for the preservation of the environment and the protection of Mother Earth.
Tiun, a media student at Multimedia University Malacca, was one of the 16 finalists
present at the New Balance flagship store at The Gardens, Midvalley recently.
New Balance is the official Sportswear sponsor for Miss Malaysia Earth 2008 and
the finalists were there to pick up shoes to be used in the sportswear segment of
The finalists each went away with a pair of New Balance shoes of their choice.
In its 8th year, this year's pageant is organised by MY Production Enterprise and
supported by Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, Tourism Malaysia, Malacca
Government and Tourism Promotion Division Malacca.
Throughout the week leading up to the pageant finals today at the Everly Resort
Hotel Malacca, the finalists got involved in a stream of activities to promote awareness
of environmental issues.
These young ladies, however, are not without their own ambitious plans to change
Chandrika believes the key step towards a better world is to instil awareness in
the younger generation to preserve the environment.
"If given the chance, I would go around to schools and try to inspire the students
to care for the environment."
"Everyone can play a part, and we can contribute in little ways in saving the environment.
Whatever a human mind can dream, conceive, and believe, it can definitely achieve,"
says the 22-year-old, who is representing Selangor.
