Give skill training, higher learning institutions urged
Sunday, January 07, 2007
Sunday Eastern Times

SIBU: INSTITUTIONS of higher learning in the country have been urged to include skill learning module in their programmes so as to help the country’s vision in making it the regional hub for educational excellence.

Making the call, the Deputy Education Minister, Datuk Ong Tee Keat, said with such module, other than offering the usual theoretical type of courses, more foreign students could be attracted to attain their higher education in the country.

Speaking at the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Value Hospitality Groups of Hotels (VH) and Times Skill Development Academy at Everly Hotel here yesterday, he said the module was now very much needed in the job market as the students could more easily gain employment than those who do not have the advantage in acquiring such skills.

“I can foresee that students who have taken such program can enhance their job market competitiveness when unemployment problem among graduates is on the rise,” he said.

Ong said internship or practical training for students would be no longer confined to just engineering or technical studies as it had become part and parcel of learning modules.

“Work base learning gives hands-on experience to students who one day could also become trainers to others using the skills that they have acquired,” he added.

Speaking to reporters later, he said the move to attract foreign students to the country would not deprive local students of places at local universities and colleges.

“We don’t limit the numbers but it is how we package our training modules. There is no such thing as local students being deprived of places at local institutions of higher learning,” he added.

At the signing ceremony, VH was represented by Manshor Yusuf while Times Skill Academy was represented by its Business Development Director, Yong Yaw Wee. Ong witnessed the signing of the MOU.

Under the agreement, the Academy is committed in assisting in the implementation of certified programmes for all levels of employees that require the development of work place skills across the whole VH Hotel Group.

The Academy is a specialist in Business Solution System. Through its Action Learning process, it develops people to manage themselves and achieve organisational goals.
